Fear
During the last few months of CA finals, all
we do is study. On an average, a candidate spends 12-16 hrs daily studying for exam.
What motivates us to study and live a life of a ‘Saint’ on those days? (Saint in
number of ways which may include all or any of the following- not sleeping, having
long beard/eyebrows, smoking up, giving up on personal life and etc etc) The
motivation for some could be getting an offer from a company like Olam
International (Which offered 70lakhs, the highest salary offered through campus
placement) or for some it might be all about marrying one’s sweetheart who has already handed over a notice of eviction if CA not cleared
on time!! However, for many, the motivation
is something dark and deep- fear of failure.
Don’t you think that fear is extremely hyped!!
Google ‘fear’ and you will get every kinda scary images possible (mostly from some 3rd
grade horror movie). Fear is implanted in our minds from early childhood. A mom
to her 4 year old kid- ‘Don’t ever talk to strangers; they tie you up, force
you inside a sack and take you home (Mom! seriously!! out of all the things, Sack!! and for god's sake, please dont come to me after 20 years and ask to marry (rather sleep) with the so called 'Stranger'),
A friend to a friend- ‘The door
opened slowly, and I think I saw a ghost walking in the corridor, I wanted to
switch on the light but it was too dark for me to find the switch!’ (Dude! Seriously!! U ‘think’ you saw a ghost!! You could not even see your own switch and u claim
to have ‘seen’ something that you have never even seen!!) Dad to son on his
first day at college- ‘The only thing you need to be a man is study’
(Dad! Seriously!! Is that the only thing required to be a man? What about being a
good human first?)
We have been conditioned in such a way that every one of us might be having certain fears in life- such as fear of ghost or fear of our partners (sometimes, they can be one and the same thing). We are literally chained by fear our entire life. Fear of failure due to which we never start the business we had always dreamt about having; Fear of rejection due to which we never express to our crush how much we love him/ her; Fear of non-acceptance due to which we surrender our trueselves and live our entire life being someone else; Fear of future due to which we might be missing out on so many things our present has to offer; Fear of god due to which we start believing in crime and punishment rather than ethics and morality; Fear of change due to which we compromise our life doing things that we just loathe; Fear of death although we might be dying everyday.
It’s high time we change coz fear is just illusionary. How? Well, the center of most neurobiological events associated
with fear is the amygdala, located behind the pituitary gland in our brain. So,
when our brain senses fear, it immediately triggers any one of the following
response- “Fight” or “Flight”. Fear is simply a perceived reaction towards
something. Since fear is just a perception, it can be controlled! Circumstances
are inevitable, but responses aren’t. One can always choose fear on a certain
circumstance and panic or simply try to remain calm and take the most appropriate
course of action.
Instead of living a life based
on fear, shouldn't we live a life based on rationality and love? Shouldn’t we be grounded with things like morality and ethics and not something as illusionary as fear? F*** fear and just dare coz it’s
time we start living!! Life’s too short to play safe. Who knows, after taking a ‘leap of faith’ to overcome that one fear,
we can be free for eternity!!
