The morning after the Storm – Surviving a disaster

A national tragedy, a devastating disaster that proved how insignificant we are compared to nature's plan. Seismologists had long predicted an earthquake of such magnitude, but the massive damage and loss of lives was not. When I first heard about the earthquake and was told that the iconic Dharahara tower no longer exists, my dreams and hopes for my country were shattered. Like millions of Nepali staying abroad, I too felt helpless. May be the fact that I couldn't share what my country and my family were facing was the saddest part of all. April 27, 2015 became the darkest day to remember.

During all the chaos and despair; there was something that shone and rose. It was - HOPE. Hope that Nepal will rise again from the rubles. Hope that Dharahara will be re- built. Hope that individuals can work together in unity and restore what was lost. Hope that lives can be saved.  The strange thing about Hope is that it can conquer anything- a mountain, a river or even death. Civilians with no utilities were using their bare hands to dig and help people even before the rescue team could reach the affected area. Doctors worked day and night to provide medical services to the injured. Army and police personnel were seen saving people’s life while risking their own. Housewives were seen distributing food and water to homeless people. It was nothing less than exemplary. People conquered fear for that very moment. Instead of locking the room to safeguard assets, people opened their houses and their hearts. Not just the people who survived the quake, people from all over the world were sending prayers to Nepal. India, China, Pakistan, Bhutan, Israel , Poland, USA were proactively providing relief materials / donation to Nepal. For that single moment, the world became one and there was no hidden agenda/ motive; all people wanted was to help. Amidst all these, my faith in humanity was restored.

A big applause to everyone who helped, who prayed, who lived the catastrophe, who became heroes and who hoped!!

Lives cannot be restored. The people who couldn't sustain the wreck of nature will always be with us in our prayers and we will restore Nepal. We will bounce back! विर गोर्खाली हामी, लेख्ने छौ नयाँ नेपालको गाथा!

And it doesn't end here. We have to be with each other till the time normality is restored. We should learn from the earthquake in Gujrat during 2001. And most importantly, the one thing we as individuals should do is to educate people that Nepal is a safe destination to travel. As per Nepal Tourism board -90% of hotels are safe and in operation, only 11 out of 75 districts and 3 out of 35 trekking routes are affected. There has been no damage to the airport or the highways. There has been no outbreak of viral diseases. Nepal is completely safe. Nepal is just as beautiful as always. The Everest still stands tall and makes the world proud.

If you want to help Nepal, plan your travel to this beautiful place right away! Help rebuild Nepal!!
