Kathmandu visit_December 2014

I recently visited Kathmandu, my hometown. It was during the time when the 18th SAARC summit was being held. Kathmandu looked like a newlywed. The streets looked lovely as it was fully lit up, the roads were repaved and buildings were freshly painted. It is estimated that $20million was expensed towards the facelift of the city.  Due to the restrictions of vehicle on the basis of odd/ even number plates, the traffic was controlled and pollution seemed to have drastically reduced.

Last time I came to Nepal, the Airport (which is the only International Airport in the country) looked like a bus station. I understand that it’s a treat to have ‘Badam’ and Orange while sun bathing, but not at the airport!! It was overtly crowded with travelers, their relatives, visitors (??!! Don’t knw why someone would visit the airport) and vehicles. The taxi drivers were a nuisance. Only if they could, they would grab all the foreigners and charge them a fortune for a taxi drive. But this time, it was completely different. There was a fleet of green numbered taxi lined up to provide cab facility on a first come-serve basis. Commendable job!

I visited Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Basantapur Durbar Square and Patan Durbar Square (All being World Heritage sites). Narrow ‘Gallis’, beautiful architecture, interesting palace and courtyards, fascinating souvenir shops, stoned paved streets etc. served as feast to the eyes. For me, these places provide a feeling of home- nice, safe and relaxing.

Although being born and brought up in Kathmandu, I had never got a chance to visit Garden of dreams, which I visited during this trip. It’s a garden situated at the heart of the city and has some historical references as well. The nominal fee that is charged to enter the place has actually been helpful to manage unnecessary crowd. The place is very well managed and peaceful though located within the urban bustle.

I also got a chance to visit Chitwan for 1 night/ 2 days. We opted a package, which included stay in a 3 star resort, 2  way transport via tourist bus, 3 meal course, Elephant Safari, Tharu cultural show, nbon-fire, barbeque and Village tour (All for NPR 4,500 per person). The package was very reasonable and totally worth it!!

Kathmandu has been a paradise for food lovers. I remember one of my managers sharing his experience about his first visit to Kathmandu. All he discussed about was food (that too for an hour or so!!). The buff momos at Yangling, the Newari food at Mangalbazar, Pizza at Fire and Ice, Thakali food at Bansbari, Thupka at Boudha, Juju Dhau at Bhaktapur,  Taas at Chitwan, Jagerbomb shot at Thamel and Daal-Bhaat-Maasu-Chamsurpalungo at home. Just Yummm!

Heaven is not too far... all you need do is open your eyes to see it..
